The vibrant city of Chennai located on the Coromandel coast, off the Bay of Bengal, in South East India, is significant for being a state capital, a bustling port, a significant automobile and industrial hub as well as a cultural destination.
The Chennai Metropolitan Area is one of the the largest city economies of India. It also has unique water bodies that have over time, continuously reminded the city of their potential to re-energize the urban environment.
We are at cross roads or should we say cross rivers, with resurgence in efforts to restore the rivers and reclaim the wetlands opening up myriad possibilities of reconnecting with water in a manner that is both new yet linked to the past.
The Chennai Pavilion explores the commons that influence the city's character, especially mobility that can enrich the urban social experience. Clues from the past, lessons from the present and scenarios for the future are presented to propose a new architectural narrative for the city.
