Curatorial note:

The curatorial concept which is at the heart of this exhibition is the celebration of the individual style, their perception and visual language of the select twenty five artists who are represented from across the Indian sub continent. Individualism as a philosophy demands an approach in visual arts, wherein it mandates that the artist marks and creates a trajectory that is different and distinct within the socio cultural context of their region and eventually the market economy that demands exclusivity and originality in their creative approach.

The twenty five artists who cover different geo-political landscape of the country have developed their individuated eco system through their style, philosophy, concept, language and vocabulary, which is either abstract or figurative. A conscious effort has been made to select artist based on their experience, which varies from student level to senior artists. Surprisingly all the selected artists have displayed an amazing maturity whether it is subject or technique. They have explored and articulated with medium and technique that suits their sensibility as well as the subject; thus creating a correspondence between the concept and the forms in their artistic expressions. Their intellectual approach and sensibility has enabled them to devise and configure compositional structuring that is visually pleasing and dynamically alive and potent. Due to their years of experience, majority of the artists within this constellation have arrived at their language and arbitrate with appropriate vocabulary to express their emotional, social or cultural concerns.

Situated within the context of their region, the local and vernacular traditions and other contemporary influences mare their expressions, with the result that the works of these twenty five artists are a visual pleasure indexed by an aesthetic of kaleidoscopic range in its articulation with elements of art as well as themes and subjects.

An attempt has been made to provide diversity of visual aesthetics that is both contemporary and Indian; and at the same time to mark a posture of difference and expressively display the artists dedicated commitment to their art and profession.

The twenty five participating artists are S. Arunagiri, Dharsha Bajaj, S. Govindrajan, Parvathi Nayar from Chennai, Bhavna Sonawane, Nitin Utge, Pravin Utge from Mumbai, Santosh Shirsit from Pune, Pallavi Pandit from Nagpur, Ananthu Thampi, Krishna Venu, Vishnupriyan .K from Kerala, Awadhesh Misra from Lucknow, Vimmiee Manoj from Indore, Veena Jain from Bhopal, Madan Lal from Chandigarh, Mukesh Sharna from New Delhi, Jiban Biswas from Kolkata, Moksha Kumar from Bengaluru, Manjula Selvam from Puducherry, Raja Sekhar Komakula, Gouri Vemula from Hyderabad, Ravi Thakur from Samastipur [Bihar], Helen Bala Brahma from Bhuvanesvari and Govind Vishwas from Baroda.

The subject matter that the artists have engaged with is essentially panoramic that includes landscapes, fantasy and imagination, ruralscapes, architecture, concept of the scarecrow, life in a circus, dreamscapes, cultural and social asymmetry, Zen of lines, women centered concepts, heritage, the vibrancy of life and optimism, the cult of rituals, abstraction of emotions, the innocence and naivety of childhood, abstraction of love and metaphysics, the culture of cinema, the urban scapes and the mentalscapes. This clearly explicates their interest and predilection towards immense complexities inherent within life, nature and the socio cultural environment they are embedded. Hence premised on their subject and themes broadly, the artists have created lively and sensuous expressions that make it a visual and an aesthetic delight to view their works. Predominantly vibrant and energetic colours dominate and it is this dimension which establishes the concept of ‘Indianness’ that is at the root of their sensibility and emerges as personal expressions.

World Music Band Dosi

Live in India...

World Music Band Dosi

Presented by

InKo Logo

With support from

mcst art council korea counslate

In association with :

InKo Centre with support from Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST), Arts Council Korea (ARKO) and Korean Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Chennai, to present World Music Band Dosi in 3-city tour across India, The tour, which includes performances, workshops and live demos in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kochi aims to introduce Indian audiences to the unique sound of Korean music that beautifully blends traditional instrumentation with contemporary interpretations.

About World Music Band Dosi:

The band captivates the audience with music that feels both familiar yet mysterious and free. As the audience is drawn deeper into this musical world, they become enchanted as if under the spell of a goblin. By combining traditional instruments such as the daegeum (bamboo flute), piri (double-reed pipe), and geomungo (zither) with the sound of the guitar and drums, this performance blends genres such as acoustic, hard rock, heavy metal, and retro electronic music. This fusion expands the boundaries of traditional Korean music, showcasing the versatility of this new world music band. The "third sound" created by Dosi, stands out for its musical agility and skill, setting their music apart from conventional creative Korean traditional music.

Motivated by traditional folk songs from Gyeonggi (central) and Seodo (northern) regions of Korea, the piece not only preserves the distinctive melodies of traditional instruments with their free bending techniques but also reinterprets symbolic gestures and imagery from traditional dances such as Buchaechum (fan dance), Salpuri (spiritual dance), and Taepyeongmu (dance of peace) through music. Through this unique storytelling, five goblin-like performers unite with the audience on stage. The performance includes a total of nine pieces, headlined by The Wind of Goblin, the Gold Prize-winning piece from the 12th 21st Century Korean Music Project, and The Moon Shadow is the Grand Prize-winning piece from the Arirang Creative Song Contest (*Arirang X ?*) organized by the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Foundation.

This tour builds upon InKo Centre’s successful past collaborations, such as with Artista Duobud (2022), Seo Jung Min (2022), and Hong Sung Hyun Art Company (2023). Through this initiative, we hope to strengthen cultural ties between Korea and India, enhancing the visibility of Korean music and expanding its audience in India.

We are confident that the World Music Band Dosi’s performances will resonate deeply with Indian audiences, further enriching the cultural exchange between India and Korea.
